If you sell anything online from UAE, you need a payment gateway integrated with Odoo. The market has consolidated to a handful of credible providers, each with different strengths, fees, and integration paths. This article walks through your real options.

Choosing the Right Gateway
For a UAE SME Doing < AED 1M/year online
PayTabs or Telr — fast onboarding, predictable fees, established Odoo connectors.
For Developer-Led UAE Businesses
Stripe — best API, fastest integration, robust webhook handling.
For Mid-Market UAE E-commerce
Network International or Checkout.com — better rates at volume, deeper enterprise capabilities.
For Subscription-Heavy Businesses
Stripe or Tap — both have mature recurring billing features that pair well with Odoo Subscriptions.
For Wallet-Heavy Markets
Tap — Apple Pay, regional wallets, KNET (Kuwait) support if you sell GCC-wide.
Integration Approach with Odoo
Three integration patterns:
Hosted Payment Page
Customer redirected from Odoo website to gateway’s secure page, paid, returned. Lowest PCI compliance scope; simpler integration.
Direct API Integration
Card details captured on your Odoo site and sent to gateway via API. Higher PCI compliance burden; better UX (no redirect).
iFrame / SDK Embedded
Hybrid: payment fields embedded in your site via gateway-provided iFrame or JavaScript SDK. Lower PCI scope, smooth UX.
Reconciliation
Most overlooked aspect. Gateway settlements arrive 1-3 days after transaction, net of fees, in batches. Odoo configuration should:
- Match settlement batches against original transactions
- Post gateway fees as separate expense entries automatically
- Reconcile to bank statements when settlement hits the bank
- Handle refunds and chargebacks correctly
UAE VAT on Gateway Fees
Payment gateway fees are subject to UAE VAT (5%) where supplied by UAE-resident providers. Configure tax treatment correctly in Odoo so input VAT is captured against the fee expense.
Common Mistakes
- Choosing the cheapest gateway without checking Odoo connector availability — custom development cost negates savings
- Not configuring webhook handlers properly — missed payment confirmations
- Skipping refund flow testing — discovered when first refund fails
- Manual reconciliation of settlements — opportunity for error and theft
- No retry logic for failed payments on subscriptions
